The Benefits of a Marketing Plan

June 30th, 2010

What is a Marketing Plan?

Marketing is to do with matching the features and benefits that your products and services are able to provide with specific customers and then telling those customers why they should buy them from you. Your marketing plan details how to do this. A Marketing Plan is a document that supplements your business plan and brings together all your market research so that you can work out exactly where your business is going and how it is going to get there.

Your plan should include:

Objectives. Details of the current market. A full analysis of your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. (SWOT Analysis.) Your plans for achieving your objectives.

The plan should be flexible and able to be adapted to meet the changing conditions in the market place.

Benefits of a Marketing Plan

Having a marketing plan will help you to focus on your target market and to find if there are any gaps in the market that will provide new opportunities for you. Your marketing plan will also provide you with something that enables you to measure how you are progressing. This can then highlight strategies that are working for you and those that are not.

A good marketing plan will also benefit you in that it provides your outside financiers with confidence that you know your market and that you know how to achieve your objectives.

A good marketing plan will deal with the matter of sourcing new leads as well as creating new networking opportunities for your business. The bottom line means your plan will define your business as well as your customers and your future plans.

What is a Good Marketing Plan

A good marketing plan is really a blueprint for the action that your business needs to take in order to achieve certain goals. It will identify the most cost effective ways of performing certain functions and should show the best way to present your business to your target audience.

A good marketing plan will save you money by cutting out unnecessary expenses while at the same time presenting you with new marketing opportunities. A good plan will work for your business to make sure that what you do fits into your budget and that your marketing drive reaches your target audience.

It will essentially keep all your activities and your budgets on track. If you don’t have a good marketing plan it is possible that you are not taking full advantage of all the ways to reach your target audience. This will result in decreased sales.

A Marketing Plan must Reach People

Your marketing plan will provide you with a track upon which your business needs to run. It is similar to a flight plan for pilots. Their flight plan tells them the direction along which their plane is going to fly, where they are leaving from and the path they have to take to get to their destination.

A sports coach will have a game plan that sets out how the team is going to play the game that particular day. The coach will work on strategies that will effectively frustrate and win out over the competition so they can come out on top.

Your marketing plan should be designed in a similar fashion.

It has to be built with an end result in mind. It should fit the specific markets you are aiming for as well as the people in those markets. It has to be flexible to meet the needs of the people in the markets because those needs are constantly changing. It must focus on people rather than on products.

Remember to always develop a marketing plan that is specifically designed to reach people.

Is Your Marketing Plan Really Ready? 3 Key Steps to a Marketing Plan Audit

June 28th, 2010

As I’ve reported many times…many of you do not even HAVE a marketing plan-at least not a documented plan you use to execute and measure sales and marketing success on a monthly basis. And most companies who do have a documented plan (I’m sorry to say) have not done the job they need to do in order to achieve big aspirations on limited budgets! There is a lot of waste in most marketing plans I audit.

So I want to address those of you who have made the effort to develop a marketing plan. I want you to be the BEST that you can be! Have you reviewed your past successes and failures, evaluated your target markets, competition, and brand position? Have you established a structured sales process and marketing mix? Do you have an adequate budget allocated?

Follow these three steps to my Marketing Audit process and make sure your marketing plan is ready for prime time:

1. Assign Auditor(s). If you are the main architect of your marketing plan/strategy, you shouldn’t be the auditor. You can’t be objective enough. Find colleagues who you respect to audit your plan. This could be an internal contact, an external influencer, or both. Make sure whomever you choose can be candid, honest, and constructive.

2. Define Audit Criteria. Define the key criteria you wish to have your marketing plan judged by. Make sure your list is complete and covers all key sections of a strong marketing plan-goals, research, organization, brand, products/services, target market, competition, sales process, marketing mix, implementation calendar, and budget.

3. Create a Marketing Plan Audit Template. Use your audit criteria to develop a template you can provide your auditors. For each of the marketing plan sections you are evaluating, create questions meant to assess the completeness and effectiveness of that section. For example, in goals you might ask, “Are the business, sales, and marketing goals defined clearly?” and “Can each goal be measured and tracked?” Make sure the template is comprehensive, easy to use, and includes a scoring system to determine the overall readiness of your marketing plan.

Following this process, you will ensure you have developed what will be a successful marketing plan. But make sure you go into the process with an open mind and thick skin. You don’t have to take every recommendation your auditor makes, but if you don’t seriously consider each, you are selling your potential…and the process…short!

Time Management in Network Marketing – 7 Ways to Master Your Time For Network Marketing Success

June 25th, 2010

Time management has to be one of the most challenging aspects of any network marketing opportunity because many folks are already working a full-time job, so making the most of your spare time is even more critical.

Are you at your wits end wondering how you can get ‘more’ done to achieve success with the limited time you have available right now?

What does time management in network marketing mean to you? Juggling meetings, trainings, learning new skills, prospecting your warm market? Are you struggling to achieve results despite working all the spare hours you have, and you’re still not making any money?

In this article, we’re going to share with you 7 ways to master your time for network marketing success. Plus, we’re offering you a very valuable, eye-opening book to help you get the most out of your business and avoid failure with strategies to help you start earning fast.

First of all, never underestimate the time it takes to achieve a result. The key is to know the result you’re aiming for. If you’re juggling a full-time job and have allocated ‘work-at-home’ hours, this precious time can easily be eroded with housekeeping, telephone calls, PC problems, surfing, challenges with submissions plus learning and applying new skills.

Tip: It helps here to keep a ‘Success Diary’ to list all your successes during the day however minor, to remind yourself of your progress. Review it at the end of your day to see how far you’ve come. Remember, small victories lead to big victories and this small victory process is the natural evolution of things. Most important is the fact that you are doing something new; learning and applying new skills which will help you reach your goals. Congratulate yourself on each new step along the way!

1. Develop a plan and work your plan

Decide what you need to accomplish to achieve a result and keep at it before moving to the next task. This can be especially difficult if you need to learn new skills. This is where many people look for short-cuts. There aren’t any. Any of the folks you see at the top had to learn new skills and develop persistence to succeed. So must you.

2. Set aside specific amounts of time to accomplish what needs to be done and avoid distractions if possible

Nothing can get you more uptight if you’ve allocated a specific amount of time to develop your network marketing business and you allow yourself to become distracted. Once that time has gone, it’s gone and you have to await your next free slot. Spend your business time slot on your business.

3. Develop the habit of discipline to keep you on track and focused

Get into the habit of spending your time productively. Minimise distractions like important messages from top marketers, eBay, computer games, TV etc which can eat time. Decide what’s important and avoid the rest. Progress may at times be slow, but if that’s what needs to be done, keep at it – success is just around the corner!

4. Act like a successful business owner

Remember you get what you expect. Many network marketers and home-based business owners are over-cautious because they’re either scared of failure, or they don’t think they will be able to manage once they reach a certain level of success. Extra help is readily available and you can hire out certain activities, but you have to put the work in first! There is no magic pill and success is not for the timid! Do you really want to be a successful home business owner?

5. Look at your progress and decide if it’s working. If not, change your approach

Seeing others around you making little progress even with the same network marketing opportunity is not indicative that things won’t work for you. Don’t follow the followers necessarily. Look at your marketplace, trends and what’s happening with your company and products and act on your intuition – it never fails! Spend your time on activities which put the customer first.

6. Are you really enthusiastic about your network marketing opportunity?

This can have a really negative impact on your time management. Check your enthusiasm towards your opportunity and that you joined for YOUR reasons not someone else’s. This is YOUR business. If you’re not happy with it, consider an alternative.

7. Make sure your marketing efforts are not splintered and splattered

Pick one area to develop in your business and stick with it until you master it. Mastering one skill can often sky-rocket your success. What particular skill, if done well, would boost your results? For example, if you’re learning internet marketing, master one area before moving on to the next piece of the puzzle. Refer back to your plan and tick off your tasks as you complete them.

Keep in mind the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step!
